¿Y si la investigación sobre inclusión no fuera inclusiva?
Reflexiones desde una investigación biográfico-narrativa

Este artículo toma como punto de referencia una investigación sobre la construcción del
proceso de exclusión en jóvenes. El estudio fue desarrollado durante el período 2004-07 dentro
del marco de un Proyecto Coordinado1 realizado en las Universidades de Sevilla y Cantabria.
La investigación fue realizada siguiendo una metodología biográfico-narrativa y supuso la
participación en la misma de 48 jóvenes en situación o riesgo de exclusión social, con edades
comprendidas entre los 18 y 25 años. El trabajo realizado con cada uno de los jóvenes, supuso
el uso de diversas técnicas narrativas que se articularon en torno a la estrategia nuclear de una
amplia entrevista biográfica diseñada ex profeso para el estudio. El análisis de datos desarrollado
ha sido doble. En primer lugar se realizó un análisis vertical de las narraciones biográficas
generadas en las sesiones de trabajo desarrolladas con cada participante, dando lugar a un primer
informe de investigación compuesto por el total de las historias de vida de los jóvenes. En
segundo lugar, se desarrolló un análisis horizontal que dio origen a un nuevo informe de investigación
que ofrece una perspectiva sincrónica y general del proceso de exclusión según los
jóvenes. A partir de la descripción de este proceso, en este artículo se hacen algunas reflexiones
sobre la forma en que se desarrolla habitualmente la llamada investigación sobre inclusión
y se proponen algunas direcciones que se han de seguir para desarrollar la misma de un modo
inclusivo. Entre ellas se plantea la necesidad de considerar la naturaleza transformadora de la investigación que puede ser en sí misma un instrumento al servicio de la inclusión. Se apela
para ello en el artículo a nuestra responsabilidad en la creación de comunidades, relaciones y
condiciones de investigación inclusivas.

What if research on inclusion were not inclusive?
Reflections from a biographical-narrative research
This paper is based on an investigation on the construction of the process of exclusion in
young people. The study was developed during the 2004-07 period, within the frame of a
Coordinated Project carried out in the Universities of Seville and Cantabria. The research was
completed following a biographical-narrative methodology, and implied the participation of 48
socially-excluded youths, or in risk of social exclusion, aged between 18 and 25. The work
accomplished with each one of the youths required the use of diverse narrative techniques
articulated around the nuclear strategy of an ample biographical interview, specifically designed
for the study. The analysis of data performed had a double nature. Firstly, a vertical analysis of
the biographical narrations generated in the work sessions conducted with each participant
was made, giving rise to a first report on the investigation made up of the total of life histories
of the youths. Secondly, a horizontal analysis was developed, which led to a new report on the
investigation that offers a synchronous and general perspective of the exclusion process
according to the youths. From the description of this process, the authors of this paper make
some reflections on the form in which investigations called ‘inclusive’ are usually carried out,
and offer some suggestions on how to enhance the inclusive character of such research. Among
them, the need to consider the transforming nature of the investigation is presented as a
potential instrument to the service of inclusion. This article hence pleads for our responsibility
in the creation of inclusive communities, relations and inclusive conditions of investigation.
